FAQs

What is your general process for creating scrap yarn?

There’s no doubt that creating art yarn takes a lot of work. Here’s a general layout of my workflow so you can get a better idea of the process and how much time and love goes into creating each skein.

  1. Once you place your order, I will contact you with my shipping information and we can start chatting about your order!

  2. Once I receive your yarn scraps, I prep them. Prepping them is basically my “quality control” before spinning. I’ll trim them if necessary, separate / unravel them (if they are plied), and fluff some yarns out so that it makes the next step a little bit easier.

  3. Carding. This is where I send the prepped scraps through my carder along with some high quality fibers! 😉 I may do this several times over to provide you the necessary / desired amount of yardage that you’re looking for.

  4. It’s time to start spinning! Each skein of yarn that I make is plied. This means I spin two whole bobbins of single spun yarn and ply them together so that you end up with a fluffy, more secure art yarn. I can also spin one yarn and ply it with gold thread - one of my signatures!!

  5. Lastly, it’s time for me to set the yarn! This is where I whip out my trusty steamer to remove the kinks in the yarn. The heat is used to secure the yarn and those little bits of scraps.

  6. Packaging and prepping everything to send to you! How exciting!

What fibers do you use as your base?

I always use a high quality blend of various fibers. My base is usually some kind of wool (cheviot, merino, corriedale cross, alpaca) and sometimes I like to throw in a blend of vegan fibers as well!

What color do you use as your base?

My general color base is a cream colored (off-white) natural wool. My overall style and aesthetic is a neutral canvas with pops of color blended throughout. I do occasionally change up the color base, but I will always consult you to ensure you are pleased with the color scheme and that the final product is something you’re pleased with!

How long should I expect it to take?

The amount of time will vary upon the season and how many orders I’m trying to keep up with (and how long it takes you to send in your scraps 😉). Expect it to take 2 weeks - 1 month. Sometimes sooner, and hopefully not longer. My goal is to get them done as soon as possible, all while maintaining a high standard of quality. I will be keeping you in the loop so you know just how long to expect!

What yarn weight will my skein be?

Expect each skein of yarn to have all sorts of weights ranging from fingering to jumbo. Due to its unique hand spun nature, there will be sections of yarn that may be super thin or super thick!

Shipping

You are responsible for sending me your yarn scraps. As long as your order is domestic (within the United States), I will happily take care of shipping it back to you at no additional cost.

If I do not receive your yarn scraps within 2 weeks of your purchase, I reserve the right to cancel your order. Obviously, the case is different for international orders!

International orders will need to take care of shipping both ways ♥️

What kind of scraps can I send in?

Wool, acrylic, cotton rope, thread, fabric strips, velvet scraps, fluff, sari silk, raffia – whatever you want! I can use small fluff from trimmings, or long pieces of scraps. However, I do NOT accept or spin with macrame / rope CORD (plied is fine!).

Disclaimers

*Because of the creative freestyle nature of each skein, the twist might be a little too tight or loose in some areas. I try to keep consistent tension and ply all throughout, but if you run into some kinks, that is why 😉. The weight change can provide a really lovely texture in weavings!

⚠️These art yarns are intended for weavers to use as the tensions and weights vary heavily throughout – some of these yarns can work for knitting or crocheting with, but I just want you to know that the weights and tensions vary in most of my yarns.

⚠️Yardage estimations provided with the bag sizes are approximations and not a guarantee. There may be more and there may be less. I will give you the final yardage once your yarn is complete!

⚠️ I am not responsible for any allergic reactions that may occur upon receiving the skein(s) of yarn.

Each skein is one-of-a-kind and made with lots of love, care, and TIME. No skein can be replicated exactly the same. If you would like a custom art yarn, please message me and let’s get talking!

What if I don’t have any yarn scraps?

That’s okay! I have plenty of my own - just message me and we can discuss what colors you’d like.

You can also keep an eye out for new releases in my shop.

Where can I place my order?

You can place your order through my Etsy shop. Just choose your selection (how many scraps you’d like to send in) and that’s where we can start chatting, exchanging information, and get rolling on the process!

Do you accept scrap donations?

Yes, I would be happy to give them a home and repurpose them! But since I can’t take everybody’s scraps (or else my house would be filled to the brim), I can only take a limited amount, and it’s helpful to see pictures of your scraps so I know what to expect and can be a bit more selective of which ones to accept.

As a reminder, I do not accept any macrame / rope cord. I can spin with plied cotton macrame and rope, but not rope that’s corded. Thank you for understanding!
